What To Wear For Your Engagement Photoshoot

Finding an outfit to wear for my engagement shoot was a MAJOR struggle. I went to numerous boutiques, malls and travelled far and wide to find the perfect outfit. I honestly wish I could create the designs I sketch but your girl had no time for that. Because of the many error, trials, and time crunch that was experienced in the search for the perfect match I’ve learned a thing or two about what to do to fulfill this need without ensuing complete frustration.  Six tips, outfit deets, engagement pictures and video are after the jump…

1.     Give yourself ample time to find the “one”: Ok, maybe the first tip was a bit dramatic but it’s imperative to take your time in this process, looking a month before your shoot date is a healthy time cushion. Nothing is worse than buying your “dream” outfit online only to find out when you try it on, it is the complete opposite (what happened to me). Make sure that you visit your tried and true stores first in person. If you try something on that was inspired by an outfit you saw on pinterest and you’re not absolutely in love with how it looks on you find something else and rethink your vision.

2.     Wear something comfortable but not too comfortable: Sometimes you will be asked to stand in awkward positions for prolonged periods of time or bend your body in certain ways that may feel uncomfortable. DO yourself a favor and wear something that you can freely move around in. If it’s your first time in front of a camera working with a professional photographer it will definitely help ease the nerves when you are confident and comfortable in your skin and the clothing you choose to adorn it with.

3.     This third tip is an extension of the second tip: Don’t dress too comfortably. I know the idea of a loose billowy maxi dress is extremely tempting when it comes thinking about comfort but consider these few things. A maxi dress may swallow your body in pictures giving the appearance of a floating head and arms. When thinking about clothing that photographs well balance should be priority. If you choose to cover a lot of skin, make sure some of it is fitted so shape is seen in the photograph. It can help to make one appear a bit more slender, which is a definite necessity. No matter how small you are the camera really does add a few pounds.

4.     Think about your environment: Is your location something more formal or relaxed? My location was a beautiful architectural park on the beach so I chose to wear an outfit that could easily transition from formal to semi formal because it called for the best of both worlds.  A skirt that is cinched at the waist yet nice and flowy will always compliment any body type and look amazing in windy outdoor locations. I was able to wear heels for the formal shots and then near the end of our shoot it felt wonderful to kick off our shoes, walk on the beach, and breathe in the fresh salty air. The photos came out incredible because how our environment made us feel showed and most importantly our mega talented photographer knew exactly how to capture it!

5.     Take Pictures of your outfit ideas with a real camera and your phone camera: Take tons of pictures from many different angles. Do you love what you see? Often times how an outfit looks in person doesn’t translate, be sure to play it safe and take trial photos of EVERY outfit from many different angles before locking down on a particular choice. If you are not sure or need a second opinion send pictures to friends with taste that you honestly trust. It is a major help and they want you to look your very best as much as you do.

6.    Be Yourself: No matter all the rules we make up to ensure success the most important thing is to be your self. I chose to play on a very classical ballerina-esque look that was neutral, bright, and whimsical. This theme gave me a feeling a freedom and warmth because of my fond memories of being a classical ballet dancer in the past. Because Crosby is the kind of guy who obsesses over formal wear but is also very low key, easy-going, and funny I styled him in something sleek and slightly more formal yet laidback using a lighter color palette. Whatever you choose have fun with what you're wearing, this is one of your moments to really show off you and your fiancé’s personality and why you're so perfect together! These photographs will be yours to reminisce for a lifetime.
